UCI and BioCubaFarma strengthen collaboration ties
During the morning session of this January 18th, the UCI-BioCubaFarma Workshop was held in the Hall room of the Camilo Cienfuegos School Building in the University of Informatics Sciences. There participated managers from both institutions and several scientists from the centers that are part of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Business Group in our country.
Dr.Sc. Miriam Nicado García, UCI Rector, welcomed the visitors, and afterwards Dr.Sc. Raydel Montesino Perurena, deputy Rector explained the work program for the day, which began with an introduction to our University. On the other hand, Dr.Sc. Rolando Pérez Rodríguez, BioCubaFarma Director of Scientific Policy also made a presentation about this entity.
In his speech, Pérez Rodríguez highlighted that BioCubaFarma produces medicine, high-tech equipment and services aimed at the improvement of human health, the generation of exportable goods and services, and the use of advanced technology in food production.
Likewise, several other aspects were discussed in the four working groups created, which addressed Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Neuroinformatics and process informatization.
In addition, UCI Rector, together with Dr.Sc. Eduardo Martínez Díaz, President of BioCubaFarma, signed a collaboration framework agreement between the two entities; this document will foster the development of joint projects and investigations.
Dr.Sc. Ricardo Bringas Pérez, head of the Bioinformatics Department of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), gave a keynote address on "The Big Data Era in Biomedical Research: Challenges and Opportunities". The students of the Bioinformatics career, accompanied by professors and specialists from UCI Development Centers, were also present in that moment.
As a conclusion of the meeting, a report was made where some of the possible projects to be developed were presented; the creation of teaching centers in this research center to carry out the professional practice; the integration of UCI in international projects of the Neurosciences Center of Cuba (CNEURO); projects for pattern recognition; creation of work fronts in the field of Cybersecurity, among others. All this will be of great benefit to continue advancing in the scientific field and computerization in Cuba.
