The main results and shortcomings of the University of Informatics Sciences (known as UCI) in 2016 were presented in the balance of accomplishments of the objectives of the institution held this Friday morning at the Convention Center of Havana.
The meeting was chaired by Ph.D. Miriam Nicado García, the member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Party, Council of State and Rector of the (UCI); The Minister and Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Ph.D. Ramón Saborido Loidi and Ph.D. Oberto Santín Cáceres, respectively, and members of the University Council. Guests also directors of the MES and representatives of companies Xetid, Softel and Calisoft.
An audiovisual material, which collected the most momentous facts assumed by the University last year, began the meeting, which continued with the analysis by the Ph.D. Nicado of the five key results areas of the institution: Competent Professional committed to the Revolution, Revolutionary collective of excellence, Economic and social impact, management of higher education and development of applications and computer services.
The Rector, who began her intervention highlighting the 14 x 90 Day developed as a tribute to our Commander in Chief, emphasized the improvement of the preparation of professors through a systematic methodological work to raise the promotion of the first year. It also marked the need to motivate students and enhance differentiated care, including talent training.
Regarding the achievements in 2016 in this area, she highlighted the achievement of Certified career by the National Accreditation Board, the second place of the UCI in the National Festival of Amateur Artists of the FEU, recognition of the institution for the work of the students teaching movement in the capital, the inauguration of the Language Center, and the formation of the Study Plan of the Bioinformatics career, which was announced, will be publicly defended next Monday, February 13th.
In her presentation, the doctor in science mentioned three representatives of our group who received the Distinction of the Ministry in different branches, the Frank Pais Order to six professors and the recognition to those who obtained the Jose Tey Medal.
Better planning of master's and doctoral degrees and revision of the courts for category changes were noted in the report, which also showed positive results in 586 scientific publications.
In a detailed analysis, the Rector considered as main results of the work developed by this house of high studies, the entrance of more than 2 million CUP and about 9 700 CUC in the commercialization of applications and computer services, as well as 133 actions of records of intellectual property.
The impact of the UCI on the computerization of the country was highlighted by the installation of the System of Planning of Activities in the Councils of the Provincial Administration (CAP) of Cienfuegos, Havana, Holguin, Granma and Artemisa.
The report also recognized the role of the University, internationally valued as one of the academic institutions most committed to free software and the first place in Latin America as more collaborating with state entities.
Among the main challenges of the UCI for 2017 is to implement and follow up on the strategy for sustainable development in the institution, improve the processes of exports of services and products, accredit the doctorate in Computer Science, the Master's in Quality of Software and external evaluation of the University.
The member of the Political Bureau concluded by recalling Fidel's words in defining what should be a University of excellence, and said that we must continue working to consolidate our training-production and research model.
In his speech, the Minister of Higher Education acknowledged the work developed in the UCI and called for strategies that raise the teaching category of the staff and result in a good training of students.
The occasion was favorable to deliver the master's degrees in Applied Computer Science to Grethell Castillo Reyes and Yerandy Manso Guerra, and in Software Quality to Sailyn Salas Hechavarría and Aymara Marín Díaz. The title of doctors in sciences were given to Zoila Morales Tabares, Omar Correa Madrigal and Ramón Santana Fernández.
A special moment was the recognition to Ph.D. Ángel Vega García, for his excellent contribution in the academic, scientific and extension counseling in the educational development of the Katya Vlad Bwila University, in the Republic of Angola, during the period from October 2014 to January 2017.
New goals, after tracing the challenges and strategies for a better make, is left to this house of high studies that is about to turn 15 years of created. The commitment to the country and to future generations of Cubans is in every student, in every software, in every leader and in every person who works with love.
