Master's Degree in Social Studies of Science and Technology

The Master's Program in Social Studies of Science and Technology provides postgraduate academic training in the areas of Philosophy and Sociology based on the epistemological and conceptual foundations that support the nexus between science, technology and society as an area of knowledge.

Graduates of the program will be able to develop teaching and research activities in the STS field, can participate in the design, implementation and control of science and technology policies of the university, as well as apply their knowledge in the improvement of teaching at different levels and in scientific-technical dissemination. In addition, they will be able to:

  • Assimilate, evaluate, critique and apply the main contemporary theoretical developments in the field of STS studies.
  • Improve the STS teaching programs in force at UCI and deliver them.
  • Formulate and carry out STS research projects within the lines defined by the program.
  • Evaluate and design educational processes involving STS knowledge and approaches.
  • Publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advise science, technology and innovation management projects.
  • Promote scientific and technical dissemination.
 

Research, development and innovation lines

  • Development of educational experiences in the STS field.
  • Study of experiences in science, technology and innovation policy and management.
  • Studies on various aspects of the interaction between science, technology and society: environmental impacts, gender and science, public participation, perception of science, scientific culture, among other topics of a national STS agenda.
  • Renewal of the theoretical-methodological frameworks of STS studies. Emphasis on the construction of theoretical visions adjusted to Cuban, Latin American and Third World realities.
 

Program structure

To obtain the degree of Master in Social Studies of Science and Technology it is necessary to accumulate at least 70 credits structured as follows:

Registration requirements

  • Be a university graduate 
  • Comply with the admission requirements of the Master's Program.
  • Submit all the documentation required and explained in the program.
  • For foreigners not graduated from Cuban universities, additional documentation legalization requirements are specified.
  • Admission to the program requires the approval of the candidate by the Academic Committee, which will take into account the curriculum of the proposed candidate and the criteria of his/her area of origin.
  • When applying for admission, the area of origin commits in writing to provide the time and conditions required to meet the requirements of the program.
